There are three versions of undercarriage available for the SD-1. All wheels and gear legs can be equipped with wheel pants to reduce aerodynamic drag, further enhancing the aircraft’s performance.
The taildragger – classic undercarriage, known for its minimal weight and low drag, is the lightest option available among our offerings. However, it does require pilots to have prior experience with taildragger aircraft due to its unique handling characteristics.
The main gear’s legs are made of pultruded fiberglass rods, a material chosen for its strength and lightweight properties. The design of the landing gear leg attachment to the fuselage allows for the absorption of even the hardest landings. The wheels, sized 12×4 inches (300×100 mm), are equipped with mechanical drum brakes, providing reliable stopping power. These brakes are activated via differential heel levers, which are controlled from either fixed or adjustable pedals, depending on the pilot’s preference. Alternatively, toe brakes can be fitted.
The tail wheel mounted in a steel fork swings at the end of composite spring. The spring is attached to the bottom of the fuselage.
The Tri Gear (TG) undercarriage is a simpler, yet robust option among our tri gear configurations. It features a free-castering nose wheel, allowing for easy maneuverability on the ground. Directional control is achieved through a combination of differential brakes and rudder inputs, providing precise handling during taxiing, take-off, and landing. Depending on pilot preference, the aircraft can be equipped with either fixed or adjustable pedals.
The main gear’s design consists of a single-piece leg made of glass roving/epoxy composite. The full carbon composite gear leg is used for the 120 kg version. The main gear leg is securely attached to the reinforced structure at the bottom of the fuselage stability and durability. The main wheels are same as at the TD version. There are light disc brake tubeless wheels used at the 120 kg version.
The nose gear features a cantilever leg made of CrMo steel tube. The nose gear leg supports a free-castering carbon composite fork, which holds the 3.00-4 (260×80 mm) nose wheel.
The TGC undercarriage offers enhanced control and ease of operation, making it an ideal choice for pilots of all experience levels. Unlike the free-castering version, the nose wheel in this configuration is directly controlled by adjustable pedals, allowing for precise steering. This feature simplifies ground handling and makes the aircraft more accessible to less experienced pilots. Higher complexity of this solution brings penalty in higher weight of nose gear installation.
Main gear design is identical to the TG version.
The nose gear leg is made of CrMo steel tubes. The suspension is handled by a combination of springs, which provides shock absorption and smooth operation. The nose wheel, sized 3.00-4 (260×80 mm), is mounted in a carbon composite fork.
