THE SD-1 BUILDERS-FINISHED AIRPLANES

Juraj Tinka of Pribor, CZ finished airplane from QB kit in very short time. It is not wonder because he is experienced modeller. He came with the idea of installing industrial B&S (22 HP) engine but it take some time to tune engine mount especially. For this reason he absolved first app. 30 hrs with proven Hirth F-33 AS (28HP) engine installed. As can be seen on attached picture he placed rescue system GRS 4/225 directly on firewall into the stainless steel case for elimination of light engine. Empty weight of airplane with this engine was 111 kg (246 lbs).

New season 2009 started with B&S Vanguard (22 HP) engine installed and till end of May flew up to 40 hours with this engine. Engine conversion is very simple using original engine parts with only propeller extension installed. Even the flywheel is original. Its weigth was reduced using lathe only. The caburator was replaced behind engine. The airplane cruises 135 km/h (85 mph) on 2700 rpm consuming 4 l/h (0,9 gph). Top speed is 185 km/h (115 mph) on 3700 rpm. The weight of plane with this engine installed          is 118 kg (262 lbs).                                                                                             In the Mr. Tinka´s words "Who will once try to fly with 4 stroke engine will not want to return to 2 stroke".                                                                                                               You can contact him on juraj.tinka@seznam.cz
Mr. Tinka prepared installation of aluminium auxiliary tanks of 17,5 l overal capacity for the season 2010. Electric pump Pierburg is driven by Li-Ion battery. The weight of whole solution is 2200 g and it could be installed in 10 min. Theoretical range should be around 1400 km.
Kestas Jurkenas of Lithuania, finished airplane from the QB kit in spring 2009. His airplane is powered by Hirth F-23 AS (50HP) engine. Kestas is director of ATC Kaunas and president of Lithuanian ultralight association and therefore is very busy, but we hope that he will soon send us more infos and some pictures of his plane.
